The Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust has received a R4 million boost for its burns unit and a paediatric burns operating theatre.
The money came after young patients scored goals in an Engen-sponsored soccer derby against Santos. The young patients' scored 4 goals to nil against Santos. Each goal amounted to a whopping R1 million, thus the R4 million donation.
Professor Heinz Rhode, the head of paediatrics, said that the money will be used to upgrade the unit and establish the first South African dedicated paediatric burns operation theatre.
There are currently four operating theatres in the hospital and they are over 50 years old. An estimated 1000 young children are treated for burns annually.
