Mop-up by government after floods wreaked havoc

By Tarryn Le Chat

Urgent action is being taken to supply water to almost 70 communities in the flood-ravaged Southern Cape. Damage is already estimated at R80 million just in one municipal district - the Eden district.

Premier of the Western Cape, Ebrahim Rasool, visited the region yesterday and was told that a vast network of country roads on the Garden Route and Klein Karoo needed to be rebuilt as soon as possible to connect people to basic necessities-food, water and shelter.

The areas affected in the Western Cape, are seven municipalities that make up the Eden District Municipality-Hessequa, Mossel Bay, George, Bitou, Knysna, Oudtshoorn and Kannaland.

Local Government and Housing MEC Richard Dyantyi said damage in the Eden District had been estimated at around R80 million.

Emergency services had issued thousands of blankets and hundreds of food parcels, along with bottled water. The areas now faced an arduous mop-up.
