Petrol price to rise by midnight

By Odette Ismail

If money is not looking prosperous at the moment, motorists need to be prepared, as the price of petrol is expected to rise by 31 cents a litre from midnight.

It will cost motorists in coastal areas R6.80 for a litre of petrol. The price of paraffin will also increase by 21 cents. Those using diesel will pay 22 cents more with a sulphur content of 0.05 while diesel with the sulphur containing percentage of 0.005 will rise to 25c a litre.

In April this year, the price of petrol rose by 24c a litre, with last month’s petrol increase being 25c. The latest increase sees the price go up a further 31c.

Many people expected taxi fares to rise but major taxi groups denied this on Tuesday. David Speelman, head of Codeta told the Cape Argus, that prices only get changed every two years but said he could not give detail on how the increase of the petrol price would affect the incomes of the taxi industry.

Shadrick Mbonjwa from the Delta Bellville Taxi Association said that they were due to hold a meeting as a result of the increase.
