A senior police officer who tried committing suicide after allegedly killing his children was granted R5000 bail yesterday.

According to Independent Online superintendent Marius van de Westhuizen aged 44 was granted bail due to prison authorities not giving him special food and medical attention. Blue Downs Magistrate Gerald Hattingh said that it was important that medical treatment and food be given to Van de Westhuizen.

The police officer shot dead his son and two daughters and turned the gun on himself, but Van der Westhuizen survived the ordeal.

The prosecutor said in court that there would be community outrage should Van de Westhuizen be given bail. Bail conditions entail that he moves to family in Uitenhage and not return to Cape Town except for medical reasons and for court proceedings.
