Mxit, a messaging service popular with the youth, is planning to take legal action against certain media who describe Mxit as a tool for child pornography and other vices.
Mxit is a new cellphone technology where users log in under a pseudonym and are able to chat in an sms form at a cost of 1c per sms.
Mxit attorney, Reinhardt Buys told the Cape Times that the company plans to sue for defamation and biased reporting after suffering “untold damage to its reputation”.
The debate between the Mxit company and the media companies is about the balance between the user’s freedom of speech, privacy, the right to information and the freedom of the press.
The media company which Mxit is planning to take to court has not been named.
