Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Cape Town this morning, kicking off an official three-day state visit to South Africa. This is the first time a Russian president has visited the country.

The Kremlin leader landed at Cape Town International airport just before 7:30am and was subsequently whisked away to meet President Thabo Mbeki at his Tuynhuis residence.

Putin’s visit starts off with a formal book-signing ceremony followed by a brief question and answer session. He will then hold bilateral talks with the Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete and the chairperson of the National Council of Provinces Mninwa Mahlangu in Parliament.

Putin is also expected to meet with business and political leaders during his stay.
