5 September 2006
A night vigil will be the held by Treatment Action Campaign from the 7th to the 8th of September 2006, outside Parliament. This comes after the department of correctional services was ordered by the Durban High Court to develop an HIV plan for the Durban Westville prison by the 8th September.
The aim of the night vigil is to put pressure on the department to draw up a proper plan, with community input. Representatives from the religious sector and NGOs will address the crowd. Members of the community who have family in jail are expected attend the night vigil.
The TAC will also hold a march on the 19th September, from Keizergracht to Parliament, starting at 9:30am. The correctional service health portfolio will be having their monthly meeting on this day. The aim of the march is to put pressure on the committee to have an HIV plan for all prisoners and to take HIV in prisons seriously.
