Residents who can’t pay their municipal accounts and refuse to do so will have until the end of October to either settle or make arrangements with the city or they could face the termination of services.
City of Cape Town mayor Helen Zille said on Thursday that these measures were aimed at recovering R3, 5billion in rates and service debts that have accumulated since the 1970’s.
According to the Cape Times non-payers in wealthier areas would be targeted first next month.
By registering at any of the council’s 173 municipal cash halls or housing schemes, qualifying residents can avoid debt collection or interest on arrears provided they pay their current accounts.
