South Africa’s roads are ‘deteriorating at a shocking pace’ warns two road safety watchdogs, this being the main cause of road accidents and a harmful effect on the country’s economy.

The Automobile Association (AA) told the Beeld that proper maintenance which will cost the economy R40 billion could cause road deaths to decrease by 5%.

Gary Ronald spokesperson for AA said meanwhile the problem is just escalating.

A road safety group, Cars said that in some parts of the country, the national roads are so appalling that it should not be used during the evening. Spokesperson for Cars said that it seems as if authorities on local and national level tried to solve pothole problems by putting up warning signs of potholes, but not fixing them.

The worst roads are appeared to be the N12 in North West. According to AA, roughly 18 000 people died on South Africa’s roads in last year. A study done last year reveals that each death cost the economy on average over R600 000.
