Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been executed. He was hanged for committing crimes against humanity at dawn this morning. The hanging took place in the Northern surburb of Khadimeya. The execution has been filmed, according to the BBC
After a one year trial, he was sentenced to death on 5 November. He was found guilty over the 1982 killings of 148 Shias in the town of Dujail.
US President George Bush says in a statement that this shows justice and in return encouraged the country’s path to democracy.
According to reports, the Iraqi government wasted no time to hang him by the end of the year, and before the Eid al-Adha holiday.
Saddam held a copy of the Koran before being hanged. A small group of Iraqis were present to witness the execution, according to the BBC. When the hangman stepped forward to put the hood over his head, Saddam wanted refused it. The execution lasted only few minutes.
US troops and Iraqi security forces have been told to be alert in case of any violent reaction, by the former leader’s supporters.
According to reports, Shias were celebrating yesterday, while some Sunni towns held protests.
It is beleived that 70 people died in two attacks in Shia areas. A car bomb left 31 people dead at a market in Kufa.
There were also uproar in Samarra and Ramadi.
