Violent clashes have broken out between rival gangs at Goodwood Prison. The clashes which broke out in the community cells have left five warders injured.

Specialised correctional services units and police were called in to stop the fighting in the prison’s C Section.

Prison authorities have identified nine inmates as instigators. These inmates have already been transferred to other prisons around the province.

They may also be charged with assault.

Correctional Services spokesperson Luphumzo Kebeni told a daily newspaper that authorities are investigating the reasons behind the fighting but says that they suspect the fights may have been linked to gang rivalry.
