Approximately 130 people were left homeless when a fire ravaged through the Doornbach informal settlement near Milnerton on Tuesday.
The blaze started in Swelledam, destroying 50 Site Five homesteads.
Fire fighters managed to get the fire under control after two gruelling hours.
The City’s Disaster Management spokesperson Johan Minnie said that they have provided shelter, food and blankets to the affected people.
Reports say that the fire started when a man burnt rubbish on his farm, causing a major veld fire at about 11pm.
The man is expected to pay R38 000 in fire fighting costs.
A daily newspaper reported that Overberg fire fighters were still deciding on whether to press criminal charges against the man.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Billy Jones indicated that no charges have been laid against the man.
