The number of botched initiation schools has dropped dramatically this year but local government hopes to form an initiation unit.
This initiation unit will be required to deal with issues relating to deaths and injuries that take place at these traditional initiation schools.
Mandla Yeki, spokesperson for Western Cape Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation MEC Whitey Jacobs, says that these and other issues led to the formation of the unit.
According to reports the collaboration with the provincial health department and traditional leaders would be essential for the unit's progress.
The department hoped to not only co-ordinate initiation schools, but also offer training to traditional surgeons.
Yeki also added that by establishing the unit, local government will be able to co-ordinate the process to ensure there are no more unnecessary deaths.
