A man has died on New Year’s Day after a wave threw him off his quad bike at Pearly Beach.

Bernie Smit, a shop owner of Worcester, had been spending time with his family at the beach.

A family member is quoted in Die Burger as saying that a wave had broken against the quad bike, causing the wheels to get stuck in the sand.

According to a report, Smit fell forward, landed on his neck and broke his neck.

His wife Marlene was driving behind him in a bakkie, when the incident took place.

The family was in shock by Smits death. According to the resort owner, Jan Koekemoer, paramedics was on the scene immediately, but Smit was declared dead at the beach.

He leaves a wife and two children behind. The funeral will be held on Saturday at Worcester.

Had the laws been obeyed this accident would never have happened. Riding a quad bike on the beach is illegal and damn dangerous. But it takes an incident like this for people to realise. I help lift his body into the ambulance at approx 03:00 new years morning, what were they doing on the beach at that hour on quads.
