The National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (SPCA) says the uncontrolled use of firework must be banned.
NSCPA spokesperson Chris Kutch says that the organisation is opposed to the controlled use of fireworks, but said the problem is the backyard use of loud exploding fireworks.
He said the effect on animals on New Year’s Eve was horrific, and the police cannot be expected to respond to calls about the illegal use of fireworks.
He said the solution is to ban the fireworks.
Independent Online reports that Identi-Pet, an animal tracking service, reported figures of pets that go missing rose up to 50 percent compared to last year.
Police warned tat fines of up to R2 000 can be imposed on people who illegally use fireworks.
