Independent Democrats (ID) leader, Patricia de Lille, says she’s delighted that the medical aid Pro Sano has been placed under curatorship.
De Lille had been approached by an employee of Pro Sano in 2006, after he had endured six years of trying to get the Registrar of medical aid schemes involved in the matter.
Reports stated that average claims per member increased by 14 percent in 2006 compared to a contributions increase of five percent, while administration cost rose to 34 percent in the same year.
“I just want to congratulate the whistleblower from Pro Sano who was dismissed from his job after coming forward with the allegations of corruption within Pro Sano”, says de Lille.
The whistleblower had met with de Lille where he gave her the information and asked her to help him get his job back.
The ID leader then took the information to the Minister of Health.
De Lille says, “It’s people like that, that we need in South Africa who will put their lives on the line for clean governance.”
According to online reports, Pro Sano spent over R17 million on advertising and marketing campaigns in just over three years with no net gain in membership.
Joe Seoloane - a provisional curator since March 30 - told the Cape High Court on Monday, that if current losses continued, the medical aid reserves of R314 million could be depleted within three years.
