The City Of Cape Town has allocated over R1, 5 million to local arts and culture organisations as part of the Council’s annual grants-in-aid to communities across city.

Simon Grindrod, mayoral committee member for Economic and Social Development says the arts is an area which is not properly funded.
“Arts and culture can play a meaningful role in developing intercultural learning, especially in the City with its diverse cultures. It can also be a catalyst for economic empowerment for individuals and organisations who would be able to generate tourism income from the spin-offs of these ventures.” Grindrod said.

The City has in total handed over R3, 7 million for grants-in-aid to more than 160 organisations. These grants are divided into six categories: Arts and Culture, early childhood development, gender equity, the development of street people, youth projects and capacity building.

Ikhwezi Youth Theartre in Khayelitsha will see R6 990 being pumped into their project, while City of Peace in Woodstock will receive R56 000. This will be used for drumming sessions as well as teacher training.

Jikeleza, Hout Bay Music Project and Zip Zap Circus will use their funding to produce a dramatic production of blending music, trapeze flying, clowning and more. This will be staged at Artscape in June.

Grindrod says deserving ad hoc projects which missed the application deadline will also receive an amount of R426 000.

The other beneficiaries are: AMAC, Sigh language Education and Development, The Athlone Academy of Music, the Baxter Theatre, Remix Dance Company, the Turfhall Jazz Music Project, Vadhini Arts Academy and Cape Town Opera.
