Capetonians urged to use water sparingly

Residents of Cape Town have been asked to use water sparingly as the dam that provides the city with most of its water will be closed to allow for construction work.

The Berg River Dam will be closed until construction of the dam is complete resulting in the distribution of water to be limited.

However the two storage dams will be combined to increase the total yield and the reliable volume of water from the dams. In order to link the two, the tunnel will be shut down from 12- 18 July 2007.

“The linking of the two schemes Berg River water project and the Theewaterskloof Dam will let water flow from the BWP to the Dam through a tunnel system”, Department of Water Affairs and Forestry says spokesperson says Nandi Mgwadlamba.

This means that there will be a restriction of on the availability of water in the city.

Even though dams are at a level of 78.2%, the department still urges the public to use water wisely and sparingly.
