Eskom workers threaten to strike if demands are not met

Talks between management and labour unions have stalled as a possible strike by Eskom workers looms this week.

“Talks have slowed down over finalising the details of the 12% salary hike which workers are demanding”, says Solidarity spokesperson Jaco Kleynhans

But Eskom spokesperson Fani Zulu confirmed that there is no strike action by its workers. “But we are putting together a contingency plan to make sure that the supply of electricity is not interrupted should there be a strike”, says Zulu.

He added that all Eskom workers are classified as essential and are not allowed to strike.

Union leaders say the next round of talks will be the make or break day that determines whether or not they vote to strike.

However unions have called for non-strike protests at power stations nationwide this week.
