Thieves stopped in their tracks after botched robbery

Three men have been arrested by police on Monday, after they robbed a man of undisclosed amount of money, at gunpoint outside a bank at Vangate Mall near Athlone.

The incident occurred at 10:15am when three armed men robbed the man while he was on his way to make a large cash deposit.

“The suspects fled in a blue VW Jetta. The police spotted the vehicle and pulled off in the Gugulethu area,” says police spokesperson Elliot Sinyangana.

A shoot out occurred between the suspects and police and a high speed car chase ensued.

“As the suspects sped into Gugulethu, they fired several shots at the police,” says Sinyangana. He added that, no one was injured during the incident.

A fourth suspect is still at large.

The suspects will appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Wednesday July, 25.
