Coalmines have begun bringing in contractors to perform the duties of the 3 500 striking Solidarity members. This step comes after the strike by the trade union members continued for a second day on Tuesday.
“Our message to the employers are that this might be a short-term solution to the problem in the industry and specifically the strike problem but they must remember that over the long-term period, if they don’t pay their artisans a proper salary, the people will leave and they will lose all these workers’ says Solidarity spokesperson Jaco Kleyhans.
Solidarity submitted a proposal to the Chamber in terms of which the strike may be ended but to date no response has been forthcoming. The Solidarity members are demanding a 10% wage increase.
