The Confederation of South African Worker’s Unions and its 27 affiliates with 300 000 members will focus on the domestic workers industry at its gender conference in Cape Town from August 6th to 8th.
The conference has announced a book that informs labour union representatives about the rights of domestic workers and dicusses the rights of the worker.
Another important discussion point at the conference is the family responsibility of women and the impact of this responsibility on the female worker.
“We feel it is important to acknowledge the value of female workers .Knowledge is one of the most effective ways to empower and this conference carries a lot of weight as a means of empowering the female worker,” says member of Consawu’s gender committee and researcher at Solidarity,Ilene Barrie.
The conference will end on Women’s Rights Day, August 9th with a march by the conference delegates to parliament where a petition will be handed over in which specific women’s rights are emphasised.
