Over 500 kg of copper, aluminium, brass and other metals were confiscated at a scrap dealer’s ‘bucket shop’ at 33 Loganberry Street, Bonteheuwel early yesterday morning.
This occurred during a raid on the backyard scrap dealer after local residents in the area gave tip-offs to members of the Bishop Lavis police and the City of Cape Town’s Copperheads Task Team.
“The joint operation was performed at the insistence of the community who were complaining of regular power blackouts caused by copper cable thefts in the vicinity,” says Chairperson of the Copperheads Task Team, Pieter van Dalen.
He added that bucket shops (which refers to unregistered scrap dealers) usually operate within a residential area.
“Their primary source of income is derived from copper cables, copper pipes and aluminium objects stolen from streetlights, sub-stations, schools, clinics and Telkom and Spoornet facilities,” says van Dalen.
The owner of the Bonteheuwel bucket shop, Riedwaan Isaacs has been charged for possession of possible stolen property.
To report any suspicious activity around substations and power lines theft, call the City of Cape Town’s Cable Theft Hot Line on 0800 222 771
