Two 15-year-old girls from Somerset West who were surfing at Dias Beach in Mossel Bay were caught in a rip-current and nearly drowned yesterday.
The National Sea Rescue Institute says their rescue station received a call from an eye-witness reporting that two girls might be in difficulty while surfing.
“I arrived on-scene first and found one of the girls safely ashore and the second girl was about 200 metres off-shore caught in a rip-current,” says NSRI Mossel Bay Deputy Station Commander, Lance van der Au.
Van der Au says he swam out to the girl and on his arrival he found her to be absolutely tired, anxious and panicking.
“It was extremely fortunate that she had remained with her surf-board for floatation but she was struggling to get to shore against a string rip-current,” says van der Au.
He added that both girls were lucky to have sustained no physical injuries and required no medical attention.
