Informal traders in Gatesville, Cape Town have been trading on the same pieces of pavement in Gatesville for more than 20 years, yet they feel like they continually facing attacks from Metro Police officers.

“This past weekend, Metro Police came after we had gone home and loaded up our goods from the parking lot where we store them, they then drove off,” says Secretary of the Gatesville Informal Trading Association, Shariefa Cloete.

Cloete adds that they condemn the Meto Police for the theft of their property. She says that they must return their stuff immediately.

“They are supposed to provide a paper when they confiscate goods, telling us where we can collect our stuff, but now we don’t know where they have taken it,” says Cloete.

Cloete explains that the Metro Police officers issued spot fines on Saturday, because they were trading without a “work permit”. She adds that they didn’t even check to see who has and who doesn’t have a permit.

“The permit in any case is besides the point as we have been trading for over 20 years, and we provide a service to the community,” says Cloete
