Soccer legend Franz Beckenbauer from Germany, was invited to Green Point Stadium in Cape Town Friday. During the soccer world cup in Germany in 2006, Beckenbauer was the President of the World Cup Organisation Committee.
Looking at the developments in Cape Town, he was very positive about what South Africa will gain from the World Cup in 2010. "We had the experience in Germany, that more than one million foreigners came to the country to watch the games. So the money you invest, will come back to the city," says Franz Beckenbauer.
Beckenbauer believes that because of the World Cup, the image of the country will be better. He doesn’t believe that foreigners will be scared to come because of the crime situation: "I trust the government that they will get the crime under control," says Beckenbauer.
The soccer legend also thinks that the Green Point Stadium will be great, and that it is a combination between the Berlin and Munich stadiums. According to Beckenbauer, those two are ‘one of the best in the world’.
Franz Beckenbauer will visit more stadiums in South Africa, but mostly he is looking forward to the kick-off in 2010.
