The trade union Solidarity says that the affirmative action in South Africa has failed and therefore should be phased out in the public service.
The union presented a report Tuesday, entitled ‘The Truth about Affirmative Action in South Africa’. It points out that the public service exceeded the targets of the Department of Trade and Industry’s targets for 2017. The public service has already achieved 75% African representation, while only 60% was needed for senior management.
Solidarity would like to see programmes to benefit white, indian and coloured people in provinces like Eastern Cape, Limpopo, North West, Northern Cape and Mpumalanga. There, the 50% black representation at senior management level exceeds 80% according to the report.
