NUM approaches the CCMA

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has approached the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to intervene with the Gautrain dispute.

Construction miners are demanding that Gautrain employers increase their salaries by giving them R8 an hour and a 100% contribution to their funeral scheme.

“We are upping the game and stakes are very high. Gautrain management will pay for their intransigence,” says NUM Construction Coordinator Bhekani Ngcobo.

The union says it demands that the Project Labour Agreement be revisited so that it comes in line with the South African constitution.

“Should the CCMA intervention fail, the NUM will be given a certificate of non-resolution which will pave the way for strike action.

If strike action takes place, the whole Gautrain thing will be a mess, we made so many compromises and workers can no longer be compromised while contractors take home billions of rands,” says Ngcobo.
