One of the two cable thieves who hacked into a live voltage power cable in Kensington has died in hospital.

After sustaining severe burn injuries during the incident, Stanley Wilson and the other 20 year old suspect from Factreton, were rushed to hospital two weeks ago.

“The city of Cape Town sympathises with the bereaved family. This latest tradegy is a sober warning for the community to act against the theft of copper cable, manhole covers and street light fittings,” says Councillor Pieter van Dalen, Chairperson of the City’s Non-ferrous Metal Theft Task Team.

Wilson passed away at the Tygerberg Hospital. The other alelleged cable thief is in a stable condition. He will be arrested as soon as he is discharged from hospital as a criminal charge has been laid against him.

According to van Dalen most communities know who the culprits are but are reluctant to report a friend or family member who is guilty of these crimes.

If you witness any suspicious activity report it immediately to the City’s 24 hour cable theft hotline on 0800 222 771 or call (021) 400 1947. Callers can remain anonymous.
