Children from across Africa gathered on the historical Robben Island for the annual Bush Radio Media Kidocracy Konference (MKK) 2007. For the next five days they will discuss topics such as media, the environment, gender and health.

Bush Radio, in partnership with UNICEF brought the youth together to talk about issues ranging from child trafficking and the rights of the child to environmental issues and female circumcision.

“This is an unique conference. Media is such a powerful thing and radio is a very powerful tool. Here kids can begin to see themselves as powerful people,” says South Africa’s Unicef representative Macharia Kamau.

Besides Kamau, several special guests came to the Island to speak at the opening of the MKK on Wednesday. One of those special guests was South African singer Danny K, who was accompanied by his model girlfriend Lee-Ann Liebenberg. While he sang a short impromptu song, he didn’t come to perform, instead, he had some inspirational words for the children.

“We must treat women with respect as they are our mothers, wives and sisters. A real man doesn’t abuse a woman,” said Danny K.

Until Monday the 50 young participants of MKK will be attending the Konfrence of Bush Radio, Unicef and Robben Island Museum.

Several guests came to the Island to speak at the opening of the Media Kidocracy Konference last night, where the kids were also entertained with hip-hop performances.
