Zamani Lili, a 24 year old police student-constable, appeared on charges of murder and armed robbery in the Wynberg Magistrate’s court this morning Monday.
According to inspector Bernadine Steyn the case was postponed until next month for a bail application. He will remain in custody.
“He was arrested on Thursday at about 05h30 at the Philippi Police Training Institution in connection with an incident that occurred at a milk factory in Olieboom Road, Philippi on 2007-11-24 between 18h00 and 19h00.
“It is alleged that five men entered the premises and ordered the staff to lie face down on the floor. They robbed them of cash, cellular phones and a set of keys,” says Inspector Bernadine Steyn.
They then fatally shot one of the staff members, 46 year old Nazeer Chicktay, in his chest before they fled the scene on foot. The deceased passed away shortly after his arrival at a nearby hospital, Steyn said.
Four suspects are still at large and the search for them continues.
