The Festive Season is in full swing and law enforcement authorities will be enforcing the law that prohibits the possession and use of fireworks on New Year’s Eve, through the festive season.
“With the assistance of the Metropolitan Police Department and the South African Police Services patrols will be conducted in neighbourhoods, confiscating fireworks and issuing fines to violators,” says Wifred Solomons Acting Head of Cape Town Disaster and Risk Management.
Throughout the holiday period, officers will be conducting nightly patrols through the city.
The penalties for violating the law are significan with violators fireworks being seized, violators could also be issued with a fine and be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding R600 or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding 12 months .
According to Solomons an appeal is therefore made to residents and tourists in Cape Town not to discharge fireworks.
“The Disaster Risk Management Centre considers preventing such fires as one of its highest priorities,” he added.
