The People Against Suffering Suppression Oppression and Poverty (PASSOP) condemned police attack on immigrants sheltered at the Johannesburg Central Methodist Church Thursday last week.
PASSOP spokesperson Braam Hanekom described the matter as brutal and xenophobic. “We call for the SAPS to be held responsible for their conduct,” says Hanekom.
According to Hanekom police violence towards immigrants, especially Zimbabweans, is common across the country. “We demand that the Constitutional rights to life and dignity of immigrants be respected,” he added.
The organisation together with the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) are said to be protesting in Cape Town this week. Attempts to get comment from the police were unsuccessful.
