The fires that have recently affected the Red Hill community has largely been brought under control says Disaster Risk Managements’ Greg Pillay.
“It’s in Red Hill where we have the informal settlement that was affected. Approximately 19 shacks were destroyed there, and we are now taking care of the inhabitants of these shacks,” says Pillay.
He adds that arrangements have been made to house them in the nearby Scarborough Community Centre. In addition it has been assured that they will be receiving blankets and meals. Pillay says that at this point in time the situation is being monitored.
The fires have been on going for the past three to four weeks.
“We call on all to exercise extreme caution. Don’t be careless… don’t throw away your cigarette buds, make sure it is put out properly. If you are braaing, make sure you extinguish the fire completely,” explains Pillay.
He goes on to say that if you live in an informal settlement, don’t leave flammable appliances that are switched on unattended.
