World long distance marathon record holder Haile Gebrselassie has retreated himself from the Beijing Olympic marathon for fears of damaging his health.
According to a daily newspaper the Ethiopian runner, who suffers from asthma, said he would rather compete in the much shorter 10 000m event at the Olympic Games in August.
“The pollution in China is a threat to my health and it would be difficult for me to run 42km in my current condition,” said Gebrselassie.
One of the major issues in the run up to the games is the amount of pollution in Beijing. An official of the International Olympic Committee has elaborated that Olympic events such as the marathon could be rescheduled if different measures did not have an required result.
