Paul Harris has staked a strong claim to become a permanent member of South Africa’s Standard Bank ODI squad.

The team is starting to focus on the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled for Pakistan in September and the next ICC World Cup, also scheduled for the sub-continent in 2011.

One of several positives that the Proteas can take out of their successful ODI campaign against Bangladesh is Harris’ debut in this form of the game.

“There is no doubt that Harry is one of the most under-rated spin bowlers in world cricket,” commented national coach Mickey Arthur.

“If one accepts that Murali is in reality a wrist spinner, then Harry is as good as any finger spinner in world cricket,” he added.

He goes on to say that the Bangladesh batsmen have been stunned to see just how good he is.

South Africa’s policy of playing two specialist spin bowlers have taken pressure off Graeme Smith. He does not have to worry about the bowlers getting through their overs in the fixed time with the threat of a suspension hanging over the captain’s head.
