Proteas captain Graeme Smith and partner Neil McKenzie duly claimed the Test match first wicket world record partnership when they scored a further nine runs on the second morning of the second Test against Bangladesh to make their stand worth 414 runs.

“The historic moment occurred at Bangladesh when Smith tucked away a quiet single to square leg off the bowling of Shakib ul Hasan,” says Michael Owen-Smith.

Owen-Smith further explains that the final partnership realized one more run before Smith has been bowled by Abdul Razzak trying a slog sweep.

Earlier the record was held by Pankaj Roy and Vinoo Mankad of India and was set against New Zealand in the fifth Test of the 1955-56 series at Madras, Chennai.

“The pair later equaled another mark when McKenzie drove Mohamad Rafique through the covers half an hour before lunch to complete his maiden double hundred,” says Owen-Smith.

According to Owen-Smith it was the second time in Test cricket history that two opening batsmen had scored double hundreds in the same innings of a Test match.

“The previous occurrence was at Kensington Oval, Barbados, in 1965 when Bobby Simpson and Bill Lawry both passed 200 for Australia against the West Indies on their way to a partnership of 382, the fifth highest of all time,” he explains.

Owen-Smith further elaborate that South Africa currently holds two of the 10 world partnerships in Test cricket with Mark Boucher and Pat Symcox having established the ninth-wicket mark of 195 against Pakistan at the Liberty Life Wanderers Stadium in 1998.
