The street in front of the Cape High Court as well at the court room was filled with angry Joe Slovo residents on Monday, who were awaiting the ruling by Judge President John Hlope on the eviction order requested by the National Housing Department and housing developer, Thubelisha Homes.
The judge ordered that if residents don’t move voluntarily, the sheriff of the court will be forced to carry out evictions.
After the ruling was given, representative of the Joe Slovo community Mzwanele Zulu said that the ruling didn’t surprise him, “This is a democracy in disguise, and we are not yet free. We are going ahead with the struggle”.
Zulu added that the residents do have a “plan B”, but at this moment they are not divulging what the details of the plan are.
The government says that the land being occupied by Joe Slovo residents in Langa will be used for a new housing development.
The first batches of residents are to move as of Monday, 17 March 2008.
