With the price of petrol being increased by 61 cents a litre last Wednesday (the most South Africans ever had to pay for petrol) Western Cape MEC for Transport and Public Works Marius Fransman, has encouraged those drivers who use private vehicles to get to and from work, to switch to public transport.
“I know there have been problems in the past, particularly revolving around issues of safety and comfort, but these matters are being addressed on a regular, ongoing basis,” says Fransman.
He adds that although more still needs to be done in terms of the three modes of public transport, (buses, trains and mini-buses) those with an open mind will be pleasantly surprised by what the three modes of transport are beginning to offer their passengers.
According to a statement by the Department, Golden Arrow Bus Company is more than ready to cope with the influx of commuters- should you decide to switch to public transport. Metrorail said that they have increased security on trains, and are embarking on a R18-billion programme to improve their train service.
Meanwhile the Western Cape Provincial Taxi Council says that they are able to pick up and drop-off commuters nearly on their doorsteps as well as close to their workplaces.

Has Marius Fransman ever been in a taxi, or has he been on a Northern Suburbs train in the afternoon, in a Metro coach. Only after he has had this experience, should he be allowed to make comments like this. He's comments are absolutely misleading.
