Solidarity welcomes move to tackle skills shortage

Trade union Soildarity has welcomed the move by the Chamber of Mines to tackle the growing issue of skills shortage. The Chamber announced on Tuesday that they wish to implement a job creation and skills development agency to train unemployed South African as masters of craft.
According to spokesperson for Solidarity Jaco Kleynhans, the initiative follows after president of the Chamer of Mines, Sipho Nkosi said that the skills shortage in South Africa is a national crisis.
“Artisan training should take priority, because we find ourselves in a real skills crisis. The skills exodus and agrowing demand for skilled workers are paralysing all South African industries and South Africa needs more than ever if the economy is to grow,” said Kleynhans.
He explains that Soildarity promotes artisan training at their Sol-Tech college which currently has an enrolment of 450 students in electrical engineering, motor vehicle maintenance and repairs, mechanical engineering and mechatronics.
