After quick police investigation one out of four men were arrested after they robbed Barristers Restaurant in Newlands Tuesday evening.

At 20:30 four unknown men allegedly arrived at the restaurant and ordered drinks. Their behaviour was very suspicious as they seemed nervous and kept visiting the rest room.

“After a while the men walked towards the bar and confronted the manager and held him at gunpoint. At the same time another manager who was passing by, noticed the incident and came to his colleague’s assistance,” says police spokesperson Angie Latchman.

However one of the suspects, seeing the manager, fired a shot in his direction, wounding the manager in his buttocks.

One of the patrons at the bar tried to assist but was assaulted on his head with the butt of the firearm.

“The suspects then demanded the cash register to be opened and removed an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene in a car.

“The wounded manager was treated and taken to hospital, where he is in a stable condition,” says Latchman.

The initial investigation established ownership and an address for the getaway vehicle. And at about 23:45 members of the Flying Squad Unit, swooped on a residence in Browns Farm in Philippi.

The occupants opened fire when seeing the police and resulted in a shoot out. The police arrested one man and the other three fled and are still at large.

The arrested suspect aged 34 will make a court appearance at the Wynberg Magistrate Court on Friday the 16 May 2008.
