Solidarity has condemned the Gauteng Transport Department or Gautrans after it’s made a promise on television to pay overdue subsidies of R115.7 million by last Saturday but up to date only paid R3.5 million to the bus companies.
According Zirk Gous of Solidarity the outstanding subsidies leaves the companies with serious cash flow problems and there is great uncertainty by the companies management where and when they would get relief.
The trade union elaborated that it is disappointing that Gauteng Transport Department does not realise how serious the problem is and approximately 2000 the bus companies’ employees may be without income if the subsidy payment problems continue.
“It is disappointing that Gautrans apparently does not realise the gravity of the situation. More than 300 000 commuters, most of them workers, may be left stranded if the bus companies do not receive the promised subsidy payments,” says Gous.
The bus companies name is North West Star (NWS) and Atteridgeville Bus Service (ABS).
