On Friday night Police arrested a 19 year old man at his home in Durbanville in connection with an incident that occurred earlier the same evening at a spaza-shop in Saartjie Baartman Street.
“It is alleged that four men approached the spaza-shop at about 22:15 on foot and demanded money from the owner. One of the suspects took out a firearm and fired shots, after which they fled on foot,” says police spokesperson Inspector Bernadine Steyn”
According to Steyn the Somalian shop owner, 28 year old Gair Rashied, sustained a gunshot wound to the side of his body and passed away on the scene.
“His 30 year old brother sustained a gunshot wound to his stomach and was taken to hospital. He is in a stable condition,” she added.
Police are still searching for the three remaining suspects.
Steyn says the arrested suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate's court (court A) on Monday (2008-05-19) on charges of Murder, Attempted Murder and Attempted Armed Robbery.
