On the 16th June, Autism Western Cape’s Executive Director, Gerhard Pieterse entered his jail cell in Bayside Mall, Tableview and embarked on the unique fundraising and awareness project named “Jail4Bail”.
After more than a month and with donations from business, corporates and the community, 37-year-old and father of an autistic child moved his cell to the new location of Canal Walk.
The organisation is hoping to raise R1-million through Pieterse's imprisonment in a mall jail cell. The move for "Jail 4 Bail" has exposed Pieterse, dressed in mock prison overalls and inhabiting a cell comprising a few square metres, to the huge shopping halls where he is able to sleep for only three hours a night.
Gerhard Pieterse says. “We are currently sitting on R375 000 after 57 days.”
During his time in Bayside Mall, Pieterse was visited by MPs, councillors, and youth commissioners. He anticipates a visit from Cape Town's mayor Helen Zille at Canal Walk next Monday.
