South Africa will host the Southern African Development Community (SADC) this weekend.

This will form part of the SADC Head of State and Government Summit in Gauteng. SADC will launch their Free Trade Area of the Community which is said to formalise the elimination of trade tariffs amongst SADC members.

Last night, South African Foreign Affairs Director General Dr. Ayanda Ntsaluba hosted a cocktail function at a plush Sandton hotel, to discuss the upcoming SADC summit.

Ntsaluba’s opening remarks were: “When we were discussing with the secretary about the structure of the program, one of the things that became absolutely clear to us was that we should structure a program that gives some opportunity, particularly for our Heads of State, to stand back and look at the region.”

Ntsaluba said this will give them an indication of the challenges that the region faces, whether it be economic or political, because the region is at a crossroad.
