During a briefing to the Standing Committee on Finance, the Office of the Premier, and the Free State Legislature on 31 July 2008, the Free State Youth Commission indicted that it had spent R807 670.68 on the ANC’s Youth Day celebrations in Thaba Nchu on the 16 June 2008.

Jacob Zuma and the ANC Youth League President, Julius Malema were the main speakers. This was the exact event where Malema made the controversial statement that he would “take up arms and kill” to ensure that Zuma becomes the next South African President.

DA Spokesperson Lindiwe Mazibuko says ,the DA regards expenditure on ANC events by state institutions such as the Free State Youth Commission and municipalities as,” a flagrant abuse of government resources for party-political purposes.”

“We have therefore requested that the Public Protector investigate this matter, so that the money can be retrieved and appropriate action taken against those responsible.”
