The test results for melamine in dairy products and cereals are expected this week.
The National Consumer Forum said if the tests results are positive, all foods will be recalled and more tests will be done.
The South African Bureau of Standards and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research said they were unable to test for the toxic chemical.
Mars Africa said four retailers in Johannesburg were told to take M&Ms off their shelves until tests were concluded, as this was the only product with a link to China.
At least 4 babies have died in China and more than 53 000 thousand have fallen ill, after eating food that contained melamine.
