Cosatu has condemned Eskom’s request for a 34 percent nominal increase.
The Trade Union has urged the National Energy Regulator of South Africa to reject the application.
Cosatu says such a large increase would cause misery for thousands of poor households especially in light of the fact that there is no tariff policy that protects poor consumers.
According to reports Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said that a 34 percent increase will also hit hundreds of small and medium businesses who are already struggling with the effects of the global financial crisis.
