A 20-million rand upgrade of Green Point marine sewer outfall by the City of Cape Town is on track and will be finished in time to accommodate the additional sewage flows expected during next year’s Soccer World Cup.

Kevin Samson, Manager of Wastewater, Water and Sanitation Department in the City of Cape Town said its current context has been operational since 1980.

The screening building which is also a historic building, said Samson “over the years, because of the aggressive environment near the sea”. Some of the infrastructure has deteriorated and it needs an upgrade.

“The upgrade is going to refurbish all the electrical and mechanical equipment and put some odour control because the place is a tourist attraction, so odour control is of high importance” said Sampson.

They have also been told to retain the design of the pump station next to the lighthouse, because it is an historic building and may not be altered. The Green Point Marine Sewer Outfall serves the greater CBD of Cape Town
