The City of Cape Town’s Social Development Facilitation Department, in partnership with the Social Crime Prevention Services section of the SAPS, is to host a Drug Awareness Campaign in Blackheath today.

The aim of the event is to alert young people to the dangers of drug abuse and its criminal consequences - theft, robbery, housebreaking and domestic violence to name but a few.

Five primary schools and four high schools will participate in the event and more than a thousand people are expected to join in the festivities.

These schools have encouraged children to write poetry, songs and plays about drug abuse and its consequences.

There is also a "sport-against-drugs" programme and the schools will participate in street soccer, touch rugby and netball tournaments.
